Our Dog Chance
by Nick Alcantara ©
You appeared in our lives
Not by accident, coincidence
Or by chance
But by divine providence
And design
Someone abandoned you
In the park
This happens all the time
But for whatever reason
You kept following me
so tamed and friendly
I heard you say
"Save me and take me home
Nobody wants me"

So we took you home
Nervous, trembling, hungry and full of anxiety
Gave you some dry food
Quickly you finished it all and asked for more
My kids were so happy
To have you as a puppy
And little did I know
Someday they will need your company

A few months later
My wife was diagnosed with cancer
We did not know
If we should keep you or let you go
The kids are so attached to you now
It breaks my heart
To see you go

You are not the perfect dog
But we can train you
So you stayed
And became part of the family
It's was three months ago
My kid's Mom lost her battle
with cancer
The writing on the wall
is so clear now
You are heaven sent
An angel in disguise
That came into our lap
You can't replace their Mom
But your unconditional love
is what counts most.
