Healing Guilt © 2000

It had been a warm sunny day. But a cold front was moving through creating an upper air disturbance making conditions right for storms. Then the rains came. Then the thunderbolts. Then the crashes of thunder. As the rains continued with intensity a rapid, violent stream of water overflowed its banks creating hazardous driving conditions. Storms are a usual occurrence in this part of the country. We were soon to find that nothing would be usual about this night. We were not prepared for what was to follow. At 2:00 a.m. a knock at the door and flashing lights jolted us out of the serenity of our sleep. The thunderstorms in the night hours were miniscule in comparison to the violent disturbance that would overtake our very lives and the storms of strong emotion that would change what began as a tranquil day.

"There’s been an accident and we need you to come with us", the highway patrolman informed us. Words that every parent hopes they will never hear. Our twins were returning home from debate team competition in another part of our state. An eighteen-wheeler truck driver had rounded a curve and lost control hitting their vehicle head-on in the storm-tossed night. As we arrived at the hospital the doctor was waiting for us. "I’m sorry, we did everything we could do."

Due to illness in the family we didn’t accompany the twins to the competition. Our lives suddenly gave way to major guilt, followed by the "If onlys..." If only we had gone with them...    If only we had someone else take them...     If only I hadn’t gotten sick... If only we had been waiting at the hospital for them... If only we could have talked to them before it was too late...

It is normal to wrestle with guilt under these circumstances. Abnormal guilt comes when we never forgive ourselves for not being there, when we allow guilt to control our lives. Seek out a pastoral counselor, and/or a biblically-based support group. If there is valid reason for guilt, just confess it to the Lord. We all make mistakes. Say, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10)

But you say, you don’t understand I never got a chance to say goodbye. Good news! There is a way you can say goodbye to your loved one(s) in a scriptural way. Deuteronomy 18:11, 12 tells us that it is an abomination unto the Lord to consult familiar spirits. Curses will result. So how do you say goodbye and tell your loved one I’m sorry for not being there for you? All you have to do is pray and ask the Lord to speak to your loved one and say what you would to your loved one if you were given one more chance. For example: "Dear Lord, You know how much I miss (insert name).  I never got a chance to say goodbye". Or..."I never got a chance to say I am sorry."  Or..."I never got a chance to tell them (insert message)." "Please give (insert name) the following (insert message) for me.  In Jesus Name I pray.  Amen."

If you, in desperation to talk to your loved one, got into contacting familiar spirits through seances, etc. you can break those curses by renouncing what you have done. For example: "Dear Lord, I didn't realize that what I was doing in desperation to reach out to my loved one was wrong. Now that I know this is wrong I choose to take back the ground I gave over to Satan. Therefore I renounce having done these things... (name it: fortune telling, Quigi board, palm reading, seances, horoscopes, hypnosis, ESP, tarot cards, tea leaf reading, etc., etc.) I ask you to cleanse my heart by the blood of Jesus so that I can experience your blessings instead of your wrath. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen."

If you do not know Jesus as your personal Saviour and Lord of your life, talk to Him as you would to a friend. For example: "Dear Jesus, I ask you to forgive me of all my sins. I ask you to come into my heart and take control of my life. I ask you to teach me your ways O Lord. I ask you to lead me to a church where I may fellowship with other believers and grow in grace and knowledge of you. In Jesus Name. Amen." Now begin to read the Word of God, His instruction manual to your heart.

"In Jesus Name be released from the guilt that has tormented you."
